Flowers Under the Knife

Today we dissected lilies...we got to take them apart, limb by limb.  I'm sure I heard the painful cry as each petal was ripped from the stem.  I wanted to cry as we slashed through the pistil, separating the stigma from the style and the ovary.  The antherless stamens were already sheared from their filaments, and I know they were mourning their loss.  It was a sad, yet necessary operation and as we stared at the lifeless flower under the microscope, I think I saw a tear fall down its stem.

In memory...
Mrs Cardinal
